Murder arrest after Dorothy Woolmer, 89, found dead at her Tottenham home

Written by on 06/08/2019

A 22-year-old man has been arrested on suspicion of murder after an 89-year-old woman was found dead at her home in Tottenham, north London.

The suspect was detained in the Tottenham area shortly before 6pm on Monday and taken into custody, Scotland Yard said.

The victim, Dorothy Woolmer, had lived at her terraced house in Waltheof Gardens for more than 70 years.

Earlier, police in riot gear and armed with tasers and shields raided a home less than half a mile away on Henningham Road, in an operation that was linked to the attack on Mrs Woolmer.

Detectives have not ruled out burglary as a motive and are keeping an open mind, the Metropolitan Police added.

Police were called to Mrs Woolmer’s home at about 10.45am on Sunday and she was pronounced dead at the scene.

They say she had been assaulted.

Neighbours have been paying tribute to Mrs Woolmer.

“You couldn’t wish for a better neighbour,” one man said, describing the attack as “disgusting”.

Mrs Woolmer’s husband, Kenneth, died a few years ago, he added.

“Kenneth was ex-navy, she was a housewife,” he continued. “We were just good neighbours. They were pleasant, would give you the time of day. You couldn’t wish for a better neighbour.”

Another neighbour, John Cerisier, said Mr and Mrs Woolmer were a “very devoted couple”.

The 72-year-old added: “I have lived here 44 years and I have known them all that time. They were a very quiet couple. They kept themselves to themselves. It’s just shocking what happened.”

Sayed Hussain, who also lives close by, said it was “terrible” and “should never have happened”.

“I haven’t got a single word to explain my sorrow,” Mr Hussain said.

Police want to hear from anyone who saw anything suspicious in and around Waltheof Gardens and the surrounding area on Saturday night or Sunday morning.
