Model Claudia Schiffer hired security to protect her bra and knickers

Written by on 31/03/2020

Claudia Schiffer says her underwear was stolen so frequently in the 1990s while she was on the catwalk, that security had to be hired to watch her bra and knickers.

One of the six original supermodels, Schiffer says the level of public scrutiny was “insane” and says it was like “being like a rock star”.

At the height of her fame, the German star told Elle UK: “You couldn’t get to your car unless a path was carved for you.”

“People would cut holes in the fashion tents and try to take pictures of us. We had security at every fashion show.”

And it seems some of Schiffer’s fans had no respect for her modesty.

She told Elle: “When I was out on the runway I’d come back and constantly my underwear would be gone – my bra, my knickers … gone!”

Dubbed the “Big Six”, Schiffer’s fellow models were British Naomi Campbell, Americans Cindy Crawford and Christy Turlington, Canadian Linda Evangelista and fellow German Tatjana Patitz.

Such was their fame, Evangelista once told reporters: “I don’t get out of bed for less than $10,000 (£8,000) a day”.

However, while five of the six supermodels appeared in George Michael‘s 1990 Freedom music video (for which they were paid $10,000 (£12,000) per day, Schiffer wasn’t involved.

She admits it’s a decision she regrets, telling the magazine: “Oh, the George Michael video where everyone participated …

“I was working with a lot of high-end brands at that time and I just thought ‘that doesn’t fit with the strategy right now’.

“It (missing the opportunity to be in the video) was stupid.”

Now a mother-of-three, 49-year-old Schiffer says ageing definitely isn’t something that worries her: “I’ve had many wonderful compliments in my time. But then you get to the next stage and you move on.

“You don’t have to be called (beautiful) your entire life. It’s a nice memory, but then the next generation starts and you hand over. For me, it’s a natural thing to do … to hand over, to not be envious or jealous.

“As a matter of fact, I can’t think of anything worse right now than if you said, ‘There’s a magic pill and it’s going to make you look 20 again’.”

Claudia’s full interview is in the May issue of Elle UK.
