Migrants seen running away after landing on Kent beach in small dinghy

Written by on 14/09/2020

A group of migrants have been seen running from the shoreline on a beach in Kent after crossing the Channel in a rubber dinghy.

Around 10 people were packed on the small boat as it was seen approaching the shingle beach on Monday.

The migrants were heard shouting out as the vessel neared the shore and ran aground at Kingsdown, near Dover.

The group, who appeared to be all men, arrived squeezed on board a grey dinghy with a black outboard motor on the back.

After the boat grounded to a halt, they leapt off and ran towards some scattered trees.

Many of them were wearing hoodies and one was seen carrying a backpack as they abandoned the dinghy at the shoreline.

The boat was later seen being towed back out to sea where it was taken on board Border Force cutter Seeker.

Kent Police and immigration enforcement officers attended the scene.

More boats carrying migrants are also thought to have crossed the English Channel on Monday.

Border Force and French patrols have been active in the Dover Strait since the early hours of the morning.

On Friday, at least 319 people made the journey on 27 boats, taking advantage of the fine weather and calm conditions.

There were reports that dozens of people wrapped in blankets and wearing life jackets were taken to the port of Dover to be processed by immigration officials.

After a lull in people attempting the dangerous crossing over the last few days, crossings resumed in large numbers amid low winds.

More than 6,100 migrants have arrived in the UK on small boats so far this year.
