Mayweather vs McGregor: Glove debate continues as Conor McGregor selects brand

Written by on 23/08/2017

Conor McGregor has chosen his brand of boxing gloves, but they have not yet been approved by the Nevada State Athletic Commission or inspected by Floyd Mayweather.

The UFC champion’s choice is still unconfirmed although they will be 8oz, rather than the regulation-sized 10oz, after the NSAC granted a "one-off exemption".

Asked if McGregor had decided his preference, his manager Audie Attar exclusively told Sky Sports: "He did. We will reveal them on August 26, fight night.

"We have to submit them directly to the Commission. That has to happen [on Wednesday]."

Mayweather’s team plan to inspect McGregor’s choice of gloves but do not expect problems, confirmed his manager Leonard Ellerbe.

"It matters, it matters," Ellerbe told Sky Sports.

"They are a very professional group. They have been open, up front, and honest. They are good to work with. We solved the 8oz glove issue. We are going to be fine."

Mayweather has had problems with his opponent’s gloves before. In 2014, he threatened to withdraw on the afternoon of his fight against Marcos Maidana before the issues were resolved.

"We’re not concerned, at all," said McGregor’s manager Attar. "There are no mind games that Floyd can play that affects Conor’s mind."

Watch Mayweather vs McGregor, from the T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas, from midnight August 26, live on Sky Sports Box Office. Book via your Sky remote or online here.
