A man has been arrested after three people were injured when a van crashed into a queue at a food bank.
Police were called to the scene of the crash at Kirk Hallam community centre in Derbyshire at 9am on Friday and said the smash involved “a number of people”.
Two people suffered serious but not life-threatening injuries, while a third person had minor injuries in the incident in Kenilworth Drive, Kirk Hallam.
A 37-year-old man from Long Eaton has been arrested on suspicion of assault occasioning grievous bodily harm with intent, police said.
Those affected had been waiting “patiently” in line for a food bank, the community centre wrote in a statement on Facebook.
“It is with huge sadness and shock that we can confirm that several people were hurt this morning when a van hit them, while they patiently waited for the Foodbank.
“For those that do – please pray for a swift return to full health for everyone involved.”
It later posted that Kirk Hallam Church would be open on Friday evening for the public to light candles and say prayers for everyone affected by the “dreadful accident”.
Detective Sergeant Scott Riley said: “There could be numerous reasons for this, and we ask anybody in the local area if they’ve got information for us.”
