M6 Turner’s Farm bridge repair to start in April

Written by on 03/03/2021

A motorway bridge in Lancashire damaged after it was struck by a lorry in 2018 will be fully repaired this spring.

Highways England is installing a new bridge support for Turner’s Farm bridge which crosses the M6 at Barnacre between junction 32 and junction 33 of the motorway.

Highways England project manager Chris Riley said:

“Our key aim is to minimise disruption and keep drivers on the move so we’ll be mainly using narrow lanes during this work with some lane closures overnight.”

A 50mph speed limit will be in place past the roadworks. There will be occasional overnight closures of the southbound carriageway with a diversion via the A6.

The new bridge column will be constructed in the verge alongside the southbound carriageway. Work is expected to start on Saturday 17 April and take about 14 weeks.

The bridge deck will need to be temporarily propped up – as it was in July 2018 after the original column was damaged by a lorry.  New foundations will then need to be built before the replacement column can be installed.

The private ‘accommodation’ bridge links farmland on either side of the motorway.
