M1: Third major crash on motorway in 24 hours

Written by on 26/12/2019

There has been another major crash on the M1, the third in just 24 hours.

The southbound carriageway has been closed in West Yorkshire following what police said was a “serious incident” involving multiple vehicles.

West Yorkshire Police said on Twitter: “The M1 south bound is closed from junction 40 to 39 due to a RTC involving multiple vehicles.

“It is expected to be closed for several hours. Please avoid the area if you can.”

Highways England said: “M1 southbound J40 Ossett to J39 Durkar closed due to a serious incident.”

Meanwhile, a 48-year-old man has died in a crash in South Wales.

The accident happened on the A465 between the junctions for Neath Abbey and Tonna at around 5pm.

South Wales Police said a black coloured Aygo collided with a red VW Beetle and a male pedestrian.

Witnesses are asked to contact the force on 101, quoting occurrence 1900472034.

There was a fatal collision on the M1 – 140 miles further south – on Christmas Eve.

A woman, who has yet to be named, was pronounced dead at the scene of the multi-vehicle crash in Bedfordshire.

It happened near junction 12 between Aylesbury and Flitwick on the northbound carriageway at around 11.15pm.

Police said another person suffered minor injuries in the crash, which closed a stretch of the motorway for several hours into Christmas Day.

The ambulance service and fire brigade also attended the scene.

Bedfordshire Police is asking witnesses or anyone with information to call 101 and quote Operation Granborough.

The third incident happened 10 miles further down the M1 on the opposite southbound lane in Hertfordshire, between Luton Airport and Dunstable.
