Lyra McKee: Police investigating journalist’s murder arrest four males in Derry

Written by on 09/05/2019

Two teenagers are among four people arrested in Northern Ireland by detectives investigating the murder of journalist Lyra McKee.

The 29-year-old was shot in the head while reporting on disturbances in Londonderry last month and died in hospital, with senior politicians including Theresa May among those who attended her funeral.

Dissident republican group the New IRA has said its members carried out the killing and police arrested four males under terrorism legislation on Thursday morning.

They are aged 15, 18, 38 and 51, and are being questioned at a serious crime suite in Musgrave Station, Belfast, after being detained in Derry.

Detective Superintendent Jason Murphy said the arrests came after searches at four houses.

He added: “I want to thank the public for the widespread support we have received to date, including more than 140 people who have provided images, footage and other details via our dedicated major incident public portal.

“I still want to hear from anyone who can tell us anything they know.”

During the confrontation Ms McKee was covering at the time she was shot, around 50 petrol bombs were thrown and two cars were burned out.

Ms McKee, who had tweeted about the “absolute madness” in the area in the hours before she lost her life, was standing near a police vehicle when she was hit by a bullet.
