The programme of events for the Sunday of the Great North Swim, scheduled for 11 June at Windermere in Cumbria, has been cancelled.
The decision was taken at 4pm on Friday 9 June by the independent event planning group as the weather forecast for Sunday predicts very strong gusting winds, which would be unsuitable for open water swimming.
All entrants are being notified of the decision. The Saturday 10 June programme of events is scheduled to go ahead as planned, so swimmers will be offered the option to take part on Saturday, or a full refund of their entry fee.
David Hart, Communications Director of organisers The Great Run Company, said, “ We are sorry to have been forced to cancel the Sunday programme of events.
“We understand the inconvenience the Sunday cancellation will cause, but the safety and well-being of our participants is our number one priority.
“We hope that by allowing Sunday swimmers the option to swim on Saturday, as many people as possible will still be able to enjoy the event.”
