Liverpool defender Joe Gomez could miss the World Cup after undergoing season-ending ankle surgery, Sky Sports News understands.
Gomez injured his ankle back in March while playing for England, but was able to play through the pain barrier and start Liverpool’s Premier League games against West Brom and Stoke City.
But he suffered a recurrence of the problem against Stoke and further scans showed he needed surgery, which will rule him out of the Champions League final against Real Madrid on May 26.
The 20-year-old was also a likely member of Gareth Southgate’s England squad for the World Cup in Russia, but his place is now in serious jeopardy.
Southgate has until May 14 to name England’s provisional 35-man squad, which has to be whittled down to 23 players by June 4.
