Liverpool feel important progress made after Rome security meeting

Liverpool feel important progress was made over the issue of fan safety following Friday’s high-level security meeting at the Italian Interior Ministry ahead of next week’s Champions League semi-final second-leg with Roma.
The club took what they described as an “exceptional measure” in calling for talks over the security operation in Rome after an incident outside Anfield on Tuesday left 53-year-old Sean Cox in critical condition in hospital.
Liverpool had grown concerned at safety measures for their travelling supporters but have now thanked the Italian authorities for “providing the most up-to-date detail” on security procedures.
A club statement said the meeting was “positive and productive” and they feel progress has been made on key issues such as meeting points, transport to and from the stadium, gate-opening times, ticket checks, post-match quarantine and important cultural information.
“All those involved displayed intent for a collaborative approach and a commitment to making the event a great sporting occasion,” the statement read.
“Important guidance for travelling Liverpool supporters was discussed at length and the process is already underway to refine that information so it can be shared with those attending at the earliest opportunity.
“The club, UEFA, AS Roma and the Italian authorities will continue to work together to deliver further information and we thank supporters for their patience while we collate, review and disseminate this guidance.”
Liverpool are still waiting on final confirmation from the Italian authorities on some specific aspects, including a fact sheet that they will ask to distribute themselves following a review.
Two Italian men remain in custody in England after being charged and refused bail. Filippo Lombardi, 20, has been charged with violent disorder and wounding/inflicting grievous bodily harm, while Daniele Sciusco, 29, is charged with violent disorder and both will appear at Liverpool Crown Court on May 24.
