Linares vs Campbell: Luke Campbell not concerned by ‘underdog’ status

Written by on 20/09/2017

Luke Campbell is unfazed by his underdog status ahead of challenging three-weight world champion Jorge Linares this weekend.

The 2012 Olympic gold medallist travels to Los Angeles to challenge WBA lightweight title-holder Linares at The Forum, live on Sky Sports Main Event.

And Campbell, who stopped former world champion Darleys Perez at Wembley Stadium in his last fight, is aware of the task he faces on foreign soil.

"If you look back most of my career in the amateurs, I’ve always been the underdog," Campbell said.

"I’d win the ABA’s, the next year I’d go in the ABA’s and still be an underdog. It doesn’t bother me in the slightest whatsoever."

Venezuelan Linares, who is well known to British fans having fought and beat Anthony Crolla and Kevin Mitchell, is regarded as among the world’s best pound-for-pound fighters.

The 32-year old has lost just three times from 45 contests since turning professional in 2002, but Campbell is confident of defying the odds under Cuban trainer Jorge Rubio.

"I’m happy with everything. At the end of the day, no one can make choices for anybody," added Campbell.

"Just because I write something down doesn’t mean I can make the choice in your head a difference."

Watch Luke Campbell challenge Jorge Linares for the WBA lightweight title on Sky Sports Main Event and Sky Sports from 3am on Sunday.
