Libby Squire: Man held over student’s murder released under investigation

Written by on 22/08/2019

A 25-year-old man arrested on suspicion of murdering student Libby Squire has been released under investigation, say police.

The disappearance of Miss Squire in February prompted a huge search in and around Hull, where she was studying philosophy.

It was nearly seven weeks before her body was found.

The 21-year-old, originally from High Wycombe in Buckinghamshire, had been on a night out with friends before she went missing.

Hundreds of police and volunteers were involved in the search but her body was found in the Humber estuary on 20 March.

The inquest into her death heard her body was identified by her fingerprints.

Detective Superintendent Martin Smalley, from Humberside Police, said the investigation was “very much live and continuing”.

“The majority of the additional analysis stage is now complete, with a small number still pending final results,” he said .

“A file is being prepared for the Crown Prosecution Service as the investigation progresses.

“My heartfelt thanks go out to Libby’s parents for their continued understanding and patience.

“They have been kept informed of all the developments in the investigation and they will always maintain our support.”
