Liam Hemsworth has filed for divorce from Miley Cyrus after seven months of marriage.
The Hunger Games actor, 29, filed legal documents in Los Angeles Superior Court on Wednesday, citing “irreconcilable differences”, a week after the couple confirmed their split.
Hemsworth has hired renowned lawyer Laura Wasser to issue the divorce proceedings, whose clients have included Ryan Reynolds, Kim Kardashian and Heidi Klum.
According to TMZ, Hemsworth and the 26-year-old American singer have a prenuptial agreement that says they are entitled to keep their individual incomes earned during their marriage.
The two were an on-again, off-again couple for more than a decade before marrying in December. They announced their separation on 10 August.
The wedding took place not long after their home in Malibu, west of Los Angeles, was destroyed in a wildfire in California.
They have no children but said in the statement announcing their split that they will remain “dedicated parents to all of their animals they share”.
The Australian actor posted a message on social media three days after the couple’s split was confirmed.
“Just a quick note to say that Miley and I have recently separated and I wish her nothing but health and happiness going forward,” Hemsworth, 29, wrote on his Instagram page, next to a picture of a beach.
“This is a private matter and I have not made, nor will I be making, any comments to any journalists or media outlets. Any reported quotes attributed to me are false. Peace and Love.”
Meanwhile, Cyrus singer posted several messages on her own Instagram page, saying that “change is inevitable” – but not directly addressing the break-up.
