Liam Gallagher: Creation Stories film-makers searching for unknown to play Oasis frontman

He’s arguably the most famous frontman of a generation, the singer whose distinctive vocals and swaggering attitude helped make Oasis one of the biggest bands of the 1990s.

Now, makers of a film about the man who discovered the Britpop band are searching for someone to play the true Rock ‘n’ Roll Star.

Creation Stories, a biopic of music executive Alan McGee, has been written by Trainspotting author Irvine Welsh, with Nick Moran directing and Danny Boyle brought in as executive producer.

Speaking to Sky News, McGee said he understood the search was also on to find a Noel Gallagher and someone to play Primal Scream’s Bobby Gillespie, although an advert put out by the casting agency only mentions Liam.

“I think Liam’s maybe the hardest to cast,” he said. “If it’s not exactly right, people will say it. You’ve got to get it bang on.

“Whoever it is will have to sound like him, get the accent right, have the swagger, be a bit of a geezer but also quite pretty as well.”

McGee launched the careers of the Jesus And Mary Chain, Primal Scream and My Bloody Valentine during his time at Creation Records, but it was his discovery of Oasis at a gig in Glasgow in 1993 which put the label on the map.

Trainspotting’s Ewen Bremner is confirmed to play the main role in the biopic, and Rupert Everett, Suki Waterhouse and Jason Flemyng are also signed up for the film, for which shooting starts in June.

McGee told Sky News the script is “phenomenal” and completely uncensored.

“I spat my tea out on the train reading it,” he said. “Irvine Welsh is a genius. It’s brilliantly funny.”

In an advert posted on Twitter, Burning Wheel Productions and Dan Hubbard Casting say they are looking for “our Liam Gallagher“.

“Do you have the swagger? Do you have the look? Do you have the voice? We are looking for more than just a haircut and a parka,” the ad states.

Wannabe Liams are asked to tape an audition performing dialogue from this 1994 clip.

Meanwhile, the Liam Gallagher documentary As It Was, which charts the singer’s comeback as a solo artist, is due for release next week.

Billed as “a no-holds barred look at the life of one of the most talked-about and charismatic artists of his generation”, it gives a backstage look at the star’s life.

In a preview clip released last week, the singer is shown jogging in San Francisco and talking about how he has left his wild days behind him.

But if you think you could be the perfect person to recreate those wild days, it’s time to get your Gallagher audition perfected.
