A toddler has died and another child and their mother have serious injuries after an incident at a farmhouse near Larne.
Police have been at the property in Bankhall Road, on the edge of the County Antrim town, throughout Monday.
Neighbour Rhonda Kernohan said: “I heard the sirens and the helicopter, the air ambulance, came and it landed up at the back of the farm.
“We thought it was a farm accident but when we looked out there was a lot of shouting and a lot of police, a lot of ambulances about.”
Another neighbour said the woman who lived at the house was a “youngish girl”.
A lane to the house has been sealed off as forensics experts gather evidence.
Police Service of Northern Ireland said a woman in her thirties and a baby were in hospital.
“The investigation is at an early stage and police are currently not looking for anyone else in connection with the death,” the force added.
Larne is a coastal town about 30 miles (48km) north of Belfast.
