Kansas City Chiefs 30-31 Oakland Raiders: Derek Carr throws late game-winning TD in dramatic finish

Written by on 20/10/2017

Derek Carr connected with Michael Crabtree on a two-yard touchdown pass with no time left to lift the Oakland Raiders to a 31-30 win over their AFC West divisional rivals Kansas City Chiefs on Thursday night.

The Raiders halted a four-game losing skid in 2017, while the Chiefs lost their second straight contest after opening the season with five consecutive wins.

Oakland marched 85 yards in 11 plays for Carr’s game-winning touchdown pass, his third on a night where he threw for 417 yards.

In a dramatic finish, quarterback Carr initially had a 29-yard touchdown pass to receiver Jared Cook with 16 seconds left in the fourth quarter overruled after a video review, as Cook was ruled down at the one-yard line.

Crabtree then caught a touchdown pass with three seconds left, only to be called for offensive pass interference. Carr tossed an incomplete pass on the next play, but Chiefs safety Ron Parker was called for holding.

The strange sequence meant there was no time left on the clock when fellow Kansas City safety Eric Murray was called for holding on another Carr incompletion, extending the game one more play – Carr then found Crabtree in the endzone for the game-winner.

Beyond the late drama, Raiders running back Marshawn Lynch was ejected from the game in the first half for making contact with an official during a scrum on the field that involved players from both teams. Lynch carried two times for just nine yards.

Meanwhile, Oakland wide receiver Amari Cooper had a huge night, catching 11 passes for 210 yards and two touchdowns.

Those two scores both came in the first quarter to see Oakland take the lead, but Kansas City rallied courtesy of a 342-yard and three-TD showing by their quarterback Alex Smith. Receiver Tyreek Hill also had a strong night, hauling in six passes for 125 yards, including a 64-yard TD.

The Chiefs led by nine going into the final quarter but, following a Raiders field goal and the late touchdown drama, slip to 5-2 on the season, while Oakland improve to 3-4.
