Two men have appeared in court charged with the manslaughter of a non-league footballer.
Matlock Town FC midfielder Jordan Sinnott died in hospital on Saturday after suffering a suspected fractured skull following an alleged assault in Retford, Nottinghamshire.
Cameron Matthews, 21, and 22-year-old Kai Denovan, both from Retford, have been charged with manslaughter, affray and common assault.
They appeared at Mansfield Magistrates’ Court on Wednesday along with a third man – 21-year-old Sean Nicholson, from Retford, who has been charged with affray.
Matthews and Nicholson were both tearful in the dock as they spoke only to confirm their names, addresses and dates of birth.
Denovan showed no emotion as he stepped into the dock around 30 minutes after his co-accused.
All three men were remanded into custody to appear at Nottingham Crown Court on 26 February.
Before joining Matlock Town, Sinnott played for Huddersfield Town, Altrincham, Bury, Halifax Town and Chesterfield during his career.
Manchester United captain and England player Harry Maguire was among those to pay tribute to the 25-year-old following his death.
Sinnott was found unconscious in Retford’s Market Place at about 2am on Saturday and died in hospital later that evening.
His brother Tom paid tribute to his younger sibling, saying: “There’s not enough words to describe him.
“Out of everyone, he was the best person I’d ever known.”
Detective Chief Inspector Rob Routledge, who is leading the investigation, has urged anyone with information to come forward.
“Even the smallest detail could be vital to our investigation, so please speak to us if you know something about what happened,” he said.
Meanwhile, an appeal has been launched for football clubs around the country to send shirts bearing Sinnott’s name to display at his funeral.
Premier League, Scottish and non-league clubs are all planning to send shirts, which are to be donated to Sport Relief.
