Jodie Taylor: England squad are closer to Mark Sampson than ever before

Written by on 18/09/2017

Jodie Taylor says the controversy over England coach Mark Sampson has created a new level of togetherness within the camp.

Striker Taylor, 31, feels the allegations made against Sampson – and subsequent FA investigation – have brought the players closer to their boss.

An internal investigation and independent inquiry, led by barrister Katharine Newton, found no wrongdoing on Sampson’s part following initial allegations made by England duo Drew Spence and Eni Aluko.

Aluko alleged Sampson told her to be careful her relatives did not bring Ebola to a game at Wembley. Her 102-cap England career has stalled since she made the claims, which Sampson denies.

Taylor says the process has taken a toll on the group but that the overall effect has been a positive one.

"It’s been tough on the team, as you’d expect," she said. "It’s been tough on Mark, it’s been tough on the players, it’s been tough on the FA.

"It’s something that’s made us closer as players and as a team, probably more than ever. It’s brought us closer to Mark, because of what’s going on, and we can’t wait to get back out and play Russia to show how together and how close we really are.

"We’ve come a long way. The togetherness culture in the team is unbelievable. Through the hard times and the good times, we are there together and I think you’ll see that tomorrow night."

It was confirmed on Sunday that the FA has received new evidence in the case, meaning Sampson was unable to comment, and instead he placed the focus on the World Cup qualifier against Russia on Tuesday.

"My job is to manage this team," he said. "As always I’ll make sure that the players are supported and have the best chance to get the three points.

"The players have prepared and worked in a diligent way this week and it’s important we get off to a good start."
