Jodie Comer speaks out about cancel culture after Twitter row

Jodie Comer has spoken out about cancel culture following the Twitter storm that erupted over her American boyfriend’s alleged support for Donald Trump.
The much loved Killing Eve star and BAFTA and Emmy winner found herself at the heart of a social media row earlier in 2020, trending online over her relationship with lacrosse player James Burke.
In a cover interview with InStyle magazine, Comer has addressed the issue, saying she was shocked by some of the things that were written and that it affected her family, too.
“It was really shocking; it was the first time I had ever been dragged into something like that,” she said. “And it wasn’t just me, it was my family.
“I had seen the absurdity of what I was being accused of, and what my partner was being accused of. I decided for my own health that I was not going to try and convince these people otherwise. I just wasn’t going to do it.”
According to the magazine, Comer said she never would have anticipated finding herself in the middle of a cancel culture row and feels the experience was a wake-up call about social media.
“The biggest lesson for me this year was: I know who I am,” she said.
Comer, who is from Liverpool, has had global success in the past few years thanks to her portrayal of psychopathic Russian assassin Villanelle in the hit show Killing Eve.
In 2019, she made a cameo in Star Wars: The Rise Of Skywalker, and has two films in the pipeline: Free Guy, with Ryan Reynolds and Taika Waititi, and The Last Duel, with Matt Damon, Ben Affleck and Adam Driver.
