The New Zealand singer, 21, shared a photo of a bath filled with water alongside lyrics from Houston’s 1992 recording of the Dolly Parton song I Will Always Love You.

She had a caption which read: “And iiii will always love you.”

Houston accidentally drowned in a bath in Los Angeles hotel room in 2012.

Her daughter Bobbi Kristina lost her life after being found face down in a bath at her home in 2015.

Lorde’s was heavily criticised online for her post, with one user saying “Damn Lorde is insensitive”.

Another said: “Whitney was a legend. she was amazing. she was a queen. she was a strong black woman. I like Lorde but this is truly disgusting.”

A third said: “Of all the songs by all the singers in the world, Lorde had to caption a picture of her bathtub with Whitney Houston lyrics.”

A separate user tweeted: “hey @lorde uh might not want to post a picture of a full bath tub with a Whitney Houston lyric. feels a bit insensitive since Whitney died in a bath tub

Lorde has now deleted the post and apologised on Instagram.

She said: “I’m so sorry for offending anyone – I hadn’t even put this together I was just excited to take a bath.

“I’m an idiot. Love Whitney forever and ever. Sorry again.”

Other social media users defended the star, insisting she would never mock Houston on purpose.

One said: “Ok…any1 who’s getting on lorde for this whitney houston thing rn isjust wanting to start drama. like of COURSE she wasn’t trying to reference her death??

“She’s only 21 and probably doesn’t even KNOW the details as she was a child when it happened, I sure as hell didn’t.”
