Hit-and-run leaves new mum fighting for life four days after giving birth

Written by on 25/09/2017

A new mother is fighting for her life after being hit by a car while pushing her four-day-old baby in a pram.

The 28-year-old is in a critical condition in hospital after the hit-and-run accident on the A34 in the Great Barr area of Birmingham at around six’o’clock on Saturday evening.

The baby’s pram was also hit by the car and the infant was kept in hospital as a precaution, but after being checked over by paramedics, was discharged.

The woman was crossing the A34 Walsall Road, reportedly near Beeches Road, when she was struck by a blue Mazda MPS Aero Sports.

The driver fled the scene on foot and is still at large.

Detective Sergeant Paul Hughes of West Midlands Police said: "This investigation is in its early stages and we are trying to establish exactly what happened. I would appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision and hasn’t yet spoken to police to make contact."

"The vehicle involved was a blue Mazda MPS Aero Sports registration number DV07 MWN. If anyone can provide information about this vehicle and its use I would like to hear from them.

"I would also appeal directly to the driver to do the right thing – come forward and speak to us now," he added.

In 2012, sisters Sarah and Claire Child were crossing the same road when they were hit by a speeding driver.

Sarah was killed instantly and Claire, who was pregnant at the time, suffered leg injuries.
