Written by on 10/06/2019

The hiker who died after being struck by lightning in the Scottish Highlands has been named as Isobel Bytautus.

The 55-year-old was airlifted from Na Gruagaichean mountain near Glencoe to Fort William on Saturday evening.

She later died in hospital from her injuries.

Her daughter Ashley posted on Facebook: “I’m broken. Whilst out on the mountains at Fort William yesterday with the Linlithgow ramblers, a group of 7 were struck by lightning.

“Mum died instantly, a freak one in a million accident you never think is possible.

“Can’t imagine life without her, I’m lost.”

Mrs Bytautus was walking with a group of seven hikers when she and another member were injured by the lightning strike.

The other walker is said to be in a stable condition.

Coastguard, ambulance service helicopters and the Glencoe Mountain Rescue Team were dispatched to find the wounded group at around 5.42pm on Saturday.

Inspector Isla Campbell from Police Scotland said: “We are grateful for the prompt and professional response from partner agencies to this tragic incident and offer our condolences to the lady’s family.”

The next of kin of the woman who died have been advised and a report will be submitted to the procurator fiscal, police said.
