Help to shape the future of the Bailrigg Garden Village

Written by on 24/05/2018

Lancaster City Council is holding a number of consultation events to help shape proposals for the Bailrigg Garden Village.

The events will give people the opportunity to discuss issues and options related to the Garden Village, with a view to putting together an Area Action Plan (AAP) for how it will be developed.

On show will be the initial options for how land might be developed and what land should be reserved for other functions, including greenspace.

The options have been developed from an informal consultation last year and subsequent evidence gathering, and draw on four main conclusions:

•       The Garden Village should be located largely on land between the main line railway and the Lancaster Canal

•       A village centre should be located just west and across the A6 from the university campus

•       Generous green space needs to be provided for the village

•       The village should be structured around new Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) routes

An ‘Issues and Options Paper’ has been produced which covers the options in more detail and will be available to review at the drop-in sessions or via the  city council’s website alongside further supporting information.

Coun Janice Hanson, Cabinet member with responsibility for regeneration and planning, said: “The Bailrigg Garden Village and an expanding Lancaster University are the twin pillars in the strategy to grow South Lancaster and provide new homes, better opportunities for businesses and more jobs.

“The informal consultation we undertook last year provided us with a lot of very useful information which has assisted in the production of a set of initial options that we’re now opening up to further consultation.

“It’s vital that the Garden Village is designed in conjunction with local people, land owners, businesses and organisations and I’d urge everyone to get involved and help us to shape this important project.”
