GGG vs Canelo: Gennady Golovkin has dig at Saul Alvarez after Las Vegas draw

Written by on 17/09/2017

Gennady Golovkin took a dig at Saul Alvarez straight after their showdown was adjudged a draw, saying it wasn’t "a true fight".

The hard-hitting middleweight had the T-Mobile Arena crowd behind him, following the judges’ decision after 12 absorbing but far from explosive rounds, on Saturday night.

After the scorecards of 110-118, 115-113, 114-114 were read out, although he was happy to remain IBF, WBA and WBC world champion, ‘Triple G’ was far from impressed with ‘Canelo’s tactics.

"He has good experience, but I wanted a true fight," he told HBO immediately after the decision.

"I like Mexican style. Every time I want a true fight, I want big drama show.

"Of course I want a rematch. I want to fight a true fight."

Alvarez, who drew his fourth professional fight back in 2006, not only felt he won "seven or eight" rounds but also dismissed Golovkin’s power.

The Kazakhstan star still carries an 87 per cent knockout ratio but has now been taken the full 12 rounds twice, following on from his points win over Daniel Jacobs in March.

‘Canelo’ was jeered by large sections of the crowd, after being asked if he had been hurt at any stage.

"Truthfully, no," he told HBO via a translator.

"It is not what they actually spoke about, not what I thought. Truthfully, it didn’t surprise me.

"In the first round I came out to see what he had, but I won seven or eight rounds easily.

"If the people want it (a rematch) yes… it was a draw."
