Gatwick Airport flights resumed after ‘systems issue’ grounded planes for two hours

Gatwick Airport says flights have resumed after being suspended for two hours due to an “air traffic control system issue”.
A spokesperson said: “Due to an air traffic control systems issue in Gatwick’s control tower, flights were suspended between 5.08pm and 7pm.
“Flights have resumed, but passengers are advised to check the status of their flight with their airline before travelling to the airport as we return to full operations.”
Although flights were now up and running, it was likely to be some time before the airport cleared a backlog of flights.
At the West Sussex airport, which is Britain’s second busiest after Heathrow, some flights on the departure and arrival boards showed delays of almost four hours.
During the disruption, the airport diverted some inbound flights to other airports.
Passengers said on social media they had been left on the tarmac at airports not just at Gatwick, but elsewhere, as their planes remained grounded due to the disruption.
