Former England boss Glenn Hoddle in hospital after collapsing

Former England manager Glenn Hoddle is “responding well” to treatment after being taken to hospital on Saturday.

Hoddle collapsed at BT Sport studios, on the day the former Tottenham midfielder turned 61.

A spokesman for Hoddle said on Saturday evening: “The condition is serious but Glenn is currently receiving specialist treatment and responding well.”

Former England international and BT Sport presenter Gary Lineker said on Twitter: “Hugely worrying news that Glenn Hoddle collapsed at the BT studios earlier. Thoughts are with him and his family. Come on Glenn.”

Hoddle played for Tottenham, Monaco and Chelsea during an illustrious playing career and was capped 53 times by England.

He went on to manage Tottenham and Chelsea, as well as Swindon, Southampton and Wolves.

Hoddle was appointed England manager in 1996 and led them to the second round of the 1998 World Cup in France, losing on penalties to Argentina.

The Football Association, via the England official Twitter account, sent a message of well-wishing to Hoddle: “Worrying news. Get well soon, Glenn Hoddle, we’re all behind you.”

England captain Harry Kane also spoke in conjuction with Tottenham, writing: “Thoughts are with Glenn Hoddle. Get well soon.”
