Written by News on 16/05/2020
A 27-year-old woman has appeared in court charged with murder after human remains were found in two suitcases.
Gareeca Conita Gordon faced Cheltenham Magistrates’ Court on Saturday morning, accused of killing a woman between 14 April and 12 May at her home address in Birmingham.
Her remains were found close to a quarry in the Forest of Dean, near Coleford, Gloucestershire, on Tuesday evening, after police were alerted by a member of the public to a vehicle being driven erratically.
The vehicle was located a short while later and two people were spoken to by officers, leading to the discovery of two suitcases containing the remains.
Police said a post-mortem was inconclusive and further examinations are ongoing to establish the cause of death.
Results of DNA tests to determine the identity of the female victim are also still being waited on.
Appearing in court via video-link, Gordon – of Salisbury Road, Birmingham – spoke only to confirm her name, address, date of birth and Jamaican nationality.
Wearing a grey sweatshirt, she was told that the case would be sent initially to Gloucester Crown Court, and was remanded in custody to appear there on 19 May.
District Judge Joti Bopa-Rai said the crown court appearance will “most likely” be via video-link.
Appearing before the judge after Gordon was 38-year-old Mahesh Sorathiya, of Denmore Gardens, Wolverhampton, who has been charged with assisting an offender.
He spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and British nationality, and a bail application was refused.
Like Gordon, he was remanded in custody to appear before Gloucester Crown Court on Tuesday via video-link.
