The first photos from the final season of Game of Thrones have been released, with a hint that winter has finally arrived in Westeros.

Central characters Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen are seen gazing into the distance together, suggesting the romance sparked in season seven will continue for at least part of the next series.

In the previous season Jon was revealed to be Aegon Targaryen, meaning he is not only related to Daenerys, but is also the true heir to the Iron Throne she covets.

Neither of them know this yet, so how that plays out is expected to be a central plot in the final season, which has a total of six episodes.

Bran Stark, who knows Jon’s true identity, also makes an appearance in the images from season eight.

Despite knowing Jon’s secret, Bran did not reveal it to him in the previous series.

Daenerys’ wise adviser Tyrion is seen stood in front of snow-covered wooden beams in the images.

HBO has released the promotional shots ahead of the much-anticipated first episode which airs in the UK on 15 April.

The set of images features simple portraits of the show’s leading characters, who all have serious expressions in troubled times for Westeros.

The last season ended with the Night King bringing down part of The Wall with the help of a dragon breathing blue fire, before White Walkers were seen stomping through its gap and heading south.

Queen Cersei Lannister, the woman who sits on the Iron Throne in King’s Landing, is seen looking regal in a black outfit with heavily-armoured shoulders.

A huge development in the previous season was her beloved brother (and lover) Jaime choosing to depart her, and it is presumed he is off to help Jon and Daenerys defeat the White Walkers.

How the cold-hearted queen uses (or abuses) her power in King’s Landing is also likely to be at the centre of much of the drama in season eight.

Jaime can be seen in his armour expressing a worried-looking smile, with it made clear in the previous series that he is fully aware of the seriousness of the threat the White Walkers pose.

Stark sisters Sansa and Arya also feature in the promotional shots, having treated viewers to the downfall of Littlefinger in the previous season.
