Extinction Rebellion: Protests across London continue for fourth day

Three people have appeared in court over this week’s climate change protests in London, as demonstrators target a new bridge in the city.
Cathy Eastburn, Mark Ovland and Luke Watson were allegedly involved in obstructing trains at Canary Wharf station on Wednesday morning as part of the Extinction Rebellion protests.
They pleaded not guilty at Highbury Magistrates’ Court and have had the case referred to Blackfriars Crown Court on 16 May, but been denied bail.
Protest group Extinction Rebellion has promised “non-violent civil disobedience” will continue for a fourth day until its demands are met.
It wants the government to “tell the truth” about how “deadly our situation is”, cut carbon emissions to net zero by 2025 and create a “citizens’ assembly” to oversee the changes.
Motorists trying to cross Vauxhall Bridge during the Thursday morning rush hour were stopped by a line of demonstrators with a banner reading “life or death”.
Waterloo Bridge remains closed as activists pitched tents, set up a skate park and used plants to deter traffic.
Police are continuing to deploy further officers throughout London’s rail network to deter and disrupt further protests on the Underground or other lines.
Nearly 400 people have been arrested over the protests so far.
A police order restricting demonstrations to an area in Marble Arch came into effect in the early hours of Tuesday.
Four protesters also glued themselves together and chained themselves to Labour Party leader Jeremy Corbyn’s house.
