England v South Africa: Sky Ocean Rescue campaign’s impact at The Oval

Written by on 30/07/2017

The Sky Ocean Rescue campaign running throughout The Oval Test is already having an impact.

With the aim of the initiative being to get rid of single-use plastic from the world’s oceans, Matt Floyd takes a tour of The Oval to see how successful that mission is proving.

Hit the video above to see exactly what’s being done.

Richard Gould, Surrey chief executive, says the club has sold 60 per cent less single-use water bottles this year in comparison to the Test last summer, while their introduction of their ‘eco cups’ has also resulted in one million fewer plastic disposable beer glasses being used.

There’s been 20 new water fountains around the ground to encourage more people to re-fill their water bottles, like the reusable ones our Sky Cricket pundits have been signing, and handing out, throughout the Test.

The campaign has also received the backing of the England boys, with Moeen Ali and Stuart Broad, in particular, encouraging you to be an #OceanHero.

Four truckloads of plastic is dumped into the ocean in the time it takes for one Broad over to be bowled, and by 2050, the plastic in the sea is set to weigh more than the fish in it.

Sky News’ Sarah Jane-Mee has been campaigning hard for the cause, and also talks of the problems plastic is causing for fish, as well as whales, in the ocean.
