England avoided posting their lowest ever Test score by 13 runs as they were bundled out for just 58 on day one of the first Test against New Zealand, at Auckland.

SCORECARD | COMMENTARY

Remarkably, England’s final total represented something of a recovery after they slumped to an embarrassing 23-8 as Trent Boult (6-32) and Tim Southee (4-25) wreaked havoc – Kane Williamson producing a stunning one-handed catch in the gully to remove Stuart Broad.

Craig Overton (33) scored 56.9 per cent of England’s runs – the 43rd highest in Test history – in an innings that lasted just 124 balls and featured five ducks.

Sky Sports Cricket pundit Rob Key reflected: “It was as if England have been peppered by Australia and have been on the back foot over and over again and they hadn’t worked out that New Zealand were going to go much fuller and they were just caught on the crease.”

Live coverage of the first Test between New Zealand and England continues on Sky Sports Cricket and across our digital platforms.
