Emmys 2017: Sean Spicer and an unexpected kiss among the highlights from the ceremony

Written by on 19/09/2017

Never mind the awards, here are the key moments you might have missed from the 69th Primetime Emmy Awards.

1. Sean Spicer had a cameo

Yes, that Sean Spicer. The former White House press secretary made a guest appearance during host Stephen Colbert’s opening monologue.

Colbert mocked Donald Trump during the awards, saying he "would not have run for President" if only he had won an Emmy for his show The Apprentice.

"So, in a way this is your fault," Colbert told the audience, adding that there was "no way of knowing" the number of people attending the ceremony.

Enter Mr Spicer, with a small podium identical to the one used when he was on Mr Trump’s team.

"This will be the largest audience to witness an Emmys, period! Both in person and around the world," Spicer said, in a reference to Mr Trump’s accusations that the media lied about the turnout at his inauguration speech.

2. Shailene Woodley was mocked for her quotes about not watching TV

The actress known for her young adult films and being arrested at Indian reservations was nominated for an Emmy for outstanding supporting actress in Sky Atlantic’s Big Little Lies.

In an interview with E! at the event, the 25-year-old star took the opportunity to mention she does not watch much TV – at a ceremony awarding TV shows.

"All my friends who watch TV, I always just ask them when they have time to," she told the reporter.

"I’m a reader," she added. "So I always read, so I always read a book instead of turning on my TV."

The tone-deaf quote was widely mocked on social media, with users criticising her "naturalistic" approach to life.

"Shailene Woodley says on the red carpet she doesn’t have a TV; she watches her shows by gazing in a drop of morning dew on a forest fern," one user wrote.

"Shailene Woodley, who doesn’t have a TV (or a home) and makes her own deodorant out of ground up Smurfs," wrote another.

3. Alec Baldwin dedicated his Emmy to Donald Trump

"At long last, Mr President, here is your Emmy," the Saturday Night Live star said, while accepting the award for outstanding supporting actor in a comedy series.

He also joked that he did not have a baby with his wife last year because of his portrayal of the US President.

"You put that orange wig on, it’s birth control, trust me," he said.

4. Elisabeth Moss dropped the f-word

The Handmaid’s Tale actress was not expected to win the outstanding lead actress award, which also saw Westworld’s Evan Rachel Wood in the running.

After thanking those who have supported her career, the star decided to thank her mother who, according to Moss, taught her "you can be kind and a f****** badass".

The word was bleeped by Emmy censors.

5. Nicole Kidman dished out the kisses – but not to her husband

Alexander Skarsgard won outstanding supporting actor for his role on Sky Atlantic’s Big Little Lies, and was thrilled when the victory was announced.

Not as thrilled as his co-star Nicole Kidman, though, who kissed him on the lips while her husband musician Keith Urban clapped.

Social media had a field day.

"Did Nicole Kidman just kiss another man on the lips while her husband is right next her?," one user asked.

"Only Alexander Skarsgård can kiss a lady on the mouth in front of her husband and get away with it," wrote another.
