Drivers urged to only travel if necessary

Cumbria Police are urging drivers to only travel if necessary.
People are advised to only drive if necessary as heavy snowfall impacts much of the county overnight (18 Jan), making driving conditions hazardous.
The heavy snowfall has led to the decision to close the snow gates on the A66 – linking Cumbria with the North-East. This was put into place at around 1.30am today.

The B5305 linking Penrith with Wigton is currently closed due to weather issues.
Drivers on the M6 – and all roads affected by the weather – are urged to drive with extreme caution.
At around 1.30am a lorry jack-knifed on the M6 northbound at the 1-mile marker for junction 39. Driver not believed to be injured and the lorry was in the process of being recovered.
