Drake headlines Wireless Festival as DJ Khaled pulls out due to extended holiday

Rapper Drake has made a surprise appearance at Wireless Festival, replacing DJ Khaled who pulled out due to “travel issues”.

The Canadian superstar headlined the north London festival, performing a half-hour set just hours after it was confirmed that DJ Khaled was unable to make the show.

Wireless Festival tweeted fans, saying: “Due to travel issues DJ Khaled will not be performing but we are working on something special that won’t disappoint…”

Drake, whose album Scorpion topped the charts this week, performed six songs, including his number one hit God’s Plan.

At the end of grime artist Giggs’ slot, Drake entered the main stage with the words “I wanna hear London go crazy tonight!”. The pair then played their collaboration KMT.

Meanwhile, DJ Khaled didn’t seem too sad to be missing his slot, posting snaps over the weekend showing him enjoying a sunny holiday in Mexico.

On Saturday he posted a picture of him and his son relaxing in an infinity pool, captioning it: “Still on vacation!!!!!!!! In this pic me and my son discussing release date for new anthem”.

And on Sunday, he posted a photo, which seemed to show him with his wife inside a private plane, enjoying a meal and making a toast.

Many fans were delighted with the unscheduled appearance, with one tweeting: “That’s like replacing a walking/shouting iPod with the world’s biggest star”.

However, many criticised the festival organisers for the short notice, despite the fact they had known about the scheduling conflict long in advance.

Festival twitter account Festive Owl broke down the situation into three simple points: “@WirelessFest officially cancels @djkhaled 4 hours before his “scheduled” time. 2. Festival has actually known for months he wasn’t coming. 3. False advertising is still better than seeing DJ Khaled.”

One music-lover shared a picture of sad-looking Love Island contestant Wes Nelson and wrote: “@Drake confirmed headlining the only #Wireless day we didn’t get tickets for.”

Festival organisers later tweeted apologising to fans for not letting them know sooner, saying DJ Khaled would be coming to perform in the UK soon.

Rumours had been swirling for several days that Drake could be performing at the annual Finsbury Park event.

Despite his holiday, it looked like DJ Khaled was back to work on Monday, posting a photo of himself in his studio reading a book, and telling fans he likes to make a list of “all the things I’m going accomplish and make happen…”.

Other performers at the festival over the weekend included Stormzy, J Cole, rapper Rick Ross, and hip hop duo Rae Sremmurd.
