Director Bryan Singer departs Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody

Written by on 05/12/2017

Bryan Singer has left the Queen biopic Bohemian Rhapsody before its completion, according to a report.

The Hollywood Reporter said the director failed to show up to the London set a number of times.

Twentieth Century Fox Film Corp has confirmed he is no longer involved with the film.

Singer’s non-attendance had forced cinematographer Newton Thomas Sigel to step in on occasion, THR said.

Rami Malek, who plays the role of Freddie Mercury in the film, complained to the studio on behalf of the cast and said the 52-year-old was unprofessional, unreliable and often absent.

There were reportedly confrontations between Malek and Singer, although these were not physical and they were said to have settled their differences.

Tom Hollander, who plays Queen manager Jim Beach, is said to have briefly quit the film because of Singer’s behaviour, but was persuaded to return, according to a source quoted in the report.

The film is to be released in December next year and a new director is expected to be named in the next few days.

Representatives for Singer, also known for his work on X-Men and The Usual Suspects, did not respond to requests for comment.
