‘Devoted’ mother dies after double-decker bus crashes into railway bridge in Swansea

Written by on 23/12/2019

A “devoted” mother, who was a passenger on a double-decker bus that crashed into a railway bridge in Swansea earlier this month, has died.

Jessica Jing Ren, 36, was one of eight people injured in the incident in Neath Road on 12 December.

Her family has paid tribute to her in a statement, issued through South Wales Police.

It read: “Jessica was the loving wife of Wenquang Wang, a devoted mother to five-year-old Yushu Wang and the cherished daughter of Mingqi Ren.

“Jessica had been a visiting academic who had joined the accounting and finance department in the School of Management in Swansea University in July this year, from Huanghuai University in China.”

The statement added: “A much loved and talented academic, Jessica will be deeply missed by her family and her friends both in China and in Swansea and will leave a great void in their lives.”

The bus company, First Cymru, said an investigation has begun into the crash.

American Olympic gold medallist Kevin Young, 53, was among those hurt in the incident and tweeted photos of his injuries from his hospital bed.

He captioned them: “Tough day trying to get to class, two broken ribs and head trauma.”

Mr Young – who remains the 400m hurdles world record holder after victory in the 1992 Games in Barcelona – is currently studying for a Masters degree in sports ethics and integrity at Swansea University.

A 63-year-old man arrested in connection with the incident has been released under investigation.

South Wales Police is continuing to appeal for witnesses and is also asking anyone who was in the area and has dash cam footage to come forward.

A spokesperson said: “If you have any information, please contact 101 quoting occurrence 1900456484”.
