Detroit Lions 24-10 New York Giants: Hosts fall to second straight defeat to open season

Written by on 19/09/2017

The New York Giants put in another disappointing performance to slip to a second straight defeat to open the season as they went down 24-10 to the Detroit Lions at home on Monday night.

A week on from scoring only three points in their season-opening defeat to the Dallas Cowboys, the Giants offence was again too easily contained, despite the return of star receiver Odell Beckham Jr from a sprained left ankle.

Beckham was limited to only 36 yards off four catches, while quarterback Eli Manning endured a torrid time, sacked five times by an impressive Lions defensive front.

Detroit QB Matthew Stafford, meanwhile, threw for two touchdowns, while rookie Jamal Agnew put the icing on the win with an 88-yard punt return in the fourth quarter.

Earlier, Stafford found Marvin Jones for a 27-yard touchdown in the first quarter and picked out Eric Ebron for a seven-yarder in the second after New York had levelled things up with their first touchdown of the season.

Manning threw an 18-yard touchdown pass to Evan Engram, but the rookie tight end was called for unsportsmanlike conduct for a seemingly obscene gesture and it allowed the Lions to get the ball in good field position for Stafford to drive them down the field for the go-ahead score.

Matt Prater added a 56-yard field goal just before half-time to stretch the Lions lead to 17-7 at the break, but New York made it a one-score game once again as Aldrick Rosas was successful with his own kick from 25 yards out early in the second half.

It was four points fewer than the Giants should have come away with on the drive, however, as they wasted a chance for a TD following a costly 10-yard holding penalty when they were facing a first-and-goal at the one-yard line.

Agnew then helped clinch the game for the Lions with his big return in the fourth quarter, seeing Detroit join the Atlanta Falcons and Carolina Panthers as the only unbeaten teams in the NFC through Week Two.
