Dennis Wise credits Olivier Giroud for Chelsea resurgence

Olivier Giroud has been the driving force behind Chelsea’s resurgence in the race for a Premier League top-four finish, according to Dennis Wise.

The France striker joined the Blues from Arsenal in the January transfer window and after a slow start to life at Stamford Bridge, has established himself in Antonio Conte’s starting line-up, scoring four goals in five matches.

With Chelsea’s hopes of Champions League qualification having seemed all but over after defeat to Tottenham and a draw with struggling West Ham in early April, four consecutive wins have reignited the race for a top-four finish.

The Blues can go level on points with third-place Liverpool, when they host Huddersfield live on Sky Sports on Wednesday evening, and Spurs – who are currently two points ahead of Chelsea – are also in action against Newcastle.

“It’s been great to see Giroud starting games,” Wise said.

“I think he’s made a big impact over the last four games that he’s played in and started and he makes a difference.”

“It’s gradually got us back into it – hopefully it’s not too late.”

Conte’s future at Stamford Bridge has been the subject of speculation during the champions’ unsuccessful title defence but Chelsea could still win the FA Cup and secure a place in the top four at the end of the season.

However, Wise, who captained Chelsea during his 11 years with the club, does not think late-season success can reconcile the differences between Conte and the Blues hierarchy.

“I would love him to stay,” Wise added.

“I just get the feeling there’s something not correct there and he feels he hasn’t got total control of what he’d like in regards to recruitment on players. I think that could be the reason behind him moving on.

“I don’t think he’ll be the one that will resign, I think Chelsea will have to say ‘away you go, let’s sort something out.’ I don’t think he’s that type of person.”
