Deaths of Wendy Knell and Caroline Pierce in 1987: Man arrested by cold case murder detectives

Written by on 03/12/2020

A 66-year-old man has been arrested in a cold case murder investigation over the deaths of two women in Kent more than 30 years ago.

The suspect, from Heathfield, East Sussex, was held by detectives on Thursday on suspicion of murdering two women from Tunbridge Wells in 1987.

Shop manager Wendy Knell, 25, was found dead after being beaten and sexually assaulted in her bedsit in the town on 23 June after failing to show up for work.

Five months later, second victim Caroline Pierce, 20, was attacked and killed outside her home in Grosvenor Park.

Ms Pierce was last seen at around midnight on 24 November 1987 after being dropped home by a taxi.

Screams were heard outside the house and her body was discovered nearly a month later in a drainage ditch 40 miles away on Romney Marsh by a farmworker.

Kent Police said the families of both victims have been told of the arrest and are being kept updated.
