Cumbria Tourism welcomes news of the ‘Great British Rail Sale’

Written by on 23/01/2024

Bosses at Cumbria Tourism say they are delighted about the announcement of the ‘Great British Rail Sale’.

The sale, which launches tomorrow (23 January) will allow rail passengers to claim up to 50% off selected rail tickets when booking from 23 to 29 January 2024.

The UK-wide sale (England, Wales and Scotland), will see more than one million discounted tickets become available for journeys taking place between 30 January and 15 March 2024.

Commenting on the sale, Managing Director of Cumbria Tourism, Gill Haigh says: “I’m delighted to see the Government taking such a proactive approach to getting travellers back onto our train network. Cumbria Tourism has long supported travel to and around our county by public transport.

“This sale could not have come at a better time for Cumbria. We will shortly be launching a spring Go Car Free campaign with Avanti West Coast and Stagecoach to encourage more of our visitors to leave their cars behind. With these huge discounts on rale fares, combined with a £2 flat rate on single bus fares around the county, this makes holidaying in Cumbria not only sustainable but extremely affordable.

An Avanti West Coast spokesperson said: “We are delighted to be supporting the Great British Rail Sale. The train is a great way to get to the region, with fast and frequent services from London, Scotland and the West Midlands, and we hope the great value fares will encourage more people to experience the many delights Cumbria has to offer.”

Cumbria Tourism’s visitor-facing website, visitlakedistrict.com features various itineraries and ideas for great days out without the need for a car.

Many of the county’s attractions also support visitors who travel by public transport by offering discounts on entry to visitors who can produce a copy of their rail or bus ticket. Attractions that offer this include Carlisle Castle and Wordsworth Museum Grasmere.
