COVID-19: Bomb disposal unit called over suspicious package at Wrexham plant linked to vaccine

A bomb disposal unit is dealing with an incident after a suspicious package was reported at a plant where the AstraZeneca vaccine is put into vials.
In a statement, the company which operates the site, Wockhardt UK, said it had partially evacuated the site as it investigated the package.
The company, which is a supply partner for AstraZeneca, said: “Wockhardt UK in Wrexham this morning received a suspicious package to site.
“All relevant authorities were immediately notified and engaged.
“Upon expert advice we have partially evacuated the site pending a full investigation. The safety of our employees and business continuity remain of paramount importance.”

The site is not owned by AstraZeneca, but Wockhardt is one of its supply partners and the plant is used to fill vials of the vaccine before it is packed and distributed.
North Wales Police said roads around Wrexham Industrial Estate are currently closed and the public has been asked to avoid the area until further notice.
Welsh First Minister Mark Drakeford tweeted: “We are working with local police and the military to find out more about this incident.
“Thank you to the security personnel who are on-site to protect lives and ensure the safety of our vaccine supply.
“This highlights the vital role they play in keeping us all safe. Diolch.”
