Coronavirus: War veteran, 99, wanted to raise £1,000 for NHS – he’s currently on £3.7m

Written by on 15/04/2020

A 99-year-old veteran has raised more than £3.7m for the NHS by walking around his garden.

Tom Moore had originally hoped to raise £1,000 by walking 100 lengths of his back yard in Bedfordshire – now he’s reached more than 3,000 times his target.

His aim was to complete it before he turns 100 on 30 April – but he is currently on track to finish by Thursday.

Upon reaching £2m, Mr Moore said on Twitter: “When I started this journey last Monday, my target was £1,000 for our incredible NHS.

“No words left… just thank you.”

Later, when the amount reached £2.5m, he added: “2.5 MILLION POUNDS for the #NHS. What an incredible day it has been. Never in my wildest imagination did I think this would be possible. Thank you to everyone that has helped keep pushing this total up.”

Originally from Keighley in Yorkshire, Mr Moore trained as a civil engineer before enlisting in the army for the Second World War, rising to captain and serving in India and Burma.

His fundraiser has seen more than 100,000 individual donors sponsor him for his 100 laps.
