Lou Pitt, his long-time friend and manager of 46 years, said: “Chris was an extraordinary man who deeply loved and respected his profession with great old fashion manners, self-deprecating humour and the music of words.

“He was a national treasure who deeply relished his Canadian roots. Through his art and humanity, he touched all of our hearts and his legendary life will endure for all generations to come.”

Plummer passed away peacefully at his home in Connecticut with his wife Elaine Taylor at his side, Deadline Hollywood
said.

The Canadian star was best known for his role as Captain Von Trapp in 1965’s The Sound of Music.

He had a varied career across film, television and theatre, starring in productions on Broadway and with the Royal Shakespeare Company. But his career particularly flourished with a succession of stand-out roles after the age of 70.

Some of his most famous movies include The Insider, Knives Out, The Girl With The Dragon Tattoo, A Beautiful Mind and Up.

Amongst the most decorated in his field, Plummer won an Oscar, two Primetime Emmys, two Tony Awards, a Golden Globe, a Screen Actors Guild Award and a Bafta during his career.

In 2012, he became the oldest actor to win an Academy Award for his supporting role in Beginners, where he played a man who comes out as gay in later life.

“You’re only two years older than me, darling,” Plummer, who was born in 1929, said to his golden statuette – first given
for films made in 1927 and 1928 – at the ceremony. “Where have you been all my life?”

In 2017, it was announced he would replace Kevin Spacey as frugal billionaire J Paul Getty in All The Money In The World, after allegations of sexual misconduct emerged against the actor.

The following year he was nominated for an Oscar for his role, breaking another age-related record to become the oldest actor to be nominated, after being enlisted at the 11th hour.

The official Twitter account for The Oscars shared a tribute to Plummer.

“Christopher Plummer beguiled audiences across generations in memorable roles from Captain von Trapp in The Sound of Music to Harlan Thrombey in Knives Out,” it said.

“He worked steadily for 60+ years, winning a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in 2012 for Beginners. He will be missed.”
