Chesterfield sack manager Gary Caldwell after eight months

Written by on 17/09/2017

Chesterfield have sacked manager Gary Caldwell.

The 35-year-old was dismissed on Saturday shortly after his side were beaten for the seventh time this season, 2-1 at home by Accrington Stanley.

Caldwell was appointed as Danny Wilson’s successor in January but was unable to prevent the Spireites’ relegation from League One last season.

A summer of squad changes failed to bring an upturn in results – Chesterfield have won just once this season and are second bottom of League Two.

Director and company secretary Ashley Carson told the club website: "Gary has worked very hard during his time at the club, but we find ourselves in a lowly position after providing him with substantial backing in the transfer market.

"After making a very poor start to the season, we feel that now is the time to appoint a new manager to bring about a change in fortunes."

Chesterfield have not lined up a replacement boss, according to Sky sources, and the position will be open to applications.
