CCTV video shows harrowing moment girl is mowed down by off-road motorbike

Written by on 14/12/2017

Police have issued shocking CCTV footage in the lead up to Christmas showing the moment two boys on an off-road motorbike crashed into a teenage girl leaving her seriously injured.

Jessica Chisnall, aged 15 at the time of the incident, was walking home from school on a pavement in Ashtons Green Drive, St Helens, Merseyside, when the bike mounted the pavement and hit her.

She was rushed to hospital with serious injuries and put in a medically-induced coma, suffering from bleeding on the brain, eye socket injuries and deep cuts before recovering at home.

The rider, aged 12, and the passenger, aged 16, had made off from the scene but were later arrested.

The rider was given a youth referral order and the passenger was given a detention and training order and disqualified from driving for five years.

Merseyside Police released the footage in a bid to deter parents from buying the motorbikes this Christmas.

The off-road bike was given to the 16-year-old passenger as a reward for doing well at school.

Jessica’s father Carl Chisnall spoke about the moment he saw his daughter lifeless in the street after he was alerted by his niece.

He said: "I ran to her and saw her lifeless on the floor and no movement. I was in shock and my first thought was she was dead.

"I just kept saying her name over and over not knowing if she could hear me or the seriousness of the injuries she had sustained.

"There was people around me offering help phoning the emergency services my focus and priority was on my daughter as my wife and other daughter were screaming and upset."

He added: "I plead with any responsible parent not to buy these bikes. They are not children’s toys, they are not road legal and can only be ridden on private land with the land owner’s permission.

"You’re wasting your money but most of all you are putting your children and others at risk."

Merseyside Police Roads Policing Constable Shaun Regan said: "It is so important that we show people the devastating and long-lasting impact that the dangerous and illegal use of off-road bikes can cause.

"Almost 12 months on from the incident, Jessica and her family are still recovering from what happened and we don’t want any other families to go through their continuing ordeal."
