Broner vs Garcia: Mikey Garcia impressively outpoints Adrien Broner in Brooklyn

Written by on 31/07/2017

Mikey Garcia produced a classy points victory over Adrien Broner in their super-lightweight showdown at the Barclays Center.

The 29-year-old supremely dictated proceedings from early on and systematically broke down Broner as he extended his unbeaten record to 37-0, winning by scores of 117-111 and 116-112 twice.

Broner made a customary flamboyant ring-walk, but that was effectively the last moment of ostentatious behaviour from ‘The Problem’ who failed to match Garcia throughout, falling to the third defeat of his professional career.

Both fighters eased into the super-lightweight showdown as neither let their hands go in a close and tentative opener.

Garcia started to find his rhythm in the second though and established control of the fight, working behind a stiff jab to outland Broner, closing the distance, landing a heavy right hook to the body.

The Californian continued his patient yet efficient approach in the next, walking forward and landing a left hand flush, a punch that was quickly shrugged off by Broner.

Going up against Garcia’s tactics, the Cincinnati native struggled to get a foothold in the contest, circling on the back foot but failing to land any significant power punches to put a dent in his onrushing opponent.

Despite some much-needed effective work from Broner in the fifth, an impressive 30-second salvo from Garcia would be enough for the Californian to continue his dominance on the scorecards.

The unbeaten three-weight world champion started to work away at the body of Broner as the fight reached its mid-rounds, seemingly at ultimate ease as he walked down ‘The Problem.’

After boos echoed around the arena, targeted at Broner’s inactivity in the eighth round, the normally always supremely vibrant and animated Broner looked disconsolate as he made his way back to his corner.

Sensing the need for urgency and after a frank talking to from his trainer, Broner upped his work-rate in the ninth and started to let his hands go, landing a telling left hook, but Garcia remained resolute.

Broner did have some good moments in the final few rounds, but ultimately it was too little too late as Garcia, still looking fresh and fit, marched to a decision victory.

Speaking after the fight, Garcia said: "That was one of my best performances, I controlled things from early on.

"Broner is a tough, great fighter, I was just the better fighter tonight.

"I have very good timing, it is underestimated, when you get in with me you find out my timing is a step ahead.

"We are ready for anybody next, we want to look at the options. I can go down to lightweight for a big fight, or stay at super-lightweight or even move up to welter."

After his third career loss, Broner said: "I want to congratulate Garcia and his team, it was a good fight. I’m a fighter and I put my heart on the line.

"I’m still Adrien Broner, still four-time, four-weight world champ and when I’m done with the sport, I will be in the history books."
