British woman killed in Corfu after being hit by speedboat

Written by on 01/09/2020

A British woman has been killed while on holiday on the Greek island of Corfu after being hit by a speedboat, according to reports.

The 60-year-old is understood to have suffered severe leg and head injuries after the vessel’s propeller hit her as she swam out from the shore.

Swimmers discovered her close to Avlaki beach on the northeast of the island on Monday morning, local news site EPT reported.

It said she had been hit by a speedboat towing a water skier and the boat, with the skier, then fled the scene.

The woman was taken to Corfu General Hospital but was pronounced dead on arrival after her femoral artery was cut, the local news site said.

EPT said her husband and daughter had been informed of her death.

It also said the port authorities are “very close” to arresting the boat’s driver.

A spokeswoman for the Foreign Office said: “We are in contact with the local authorities following reports that a British woman has died in Corfu.”

According to EPT, more than 15 people have died in the past five years in Greece as a result of speedboat accidents.
