British Airways flights to Cairo resume after security checks

Written by on 26/07/2019

British Airways has resumed flights to Cairo – a week after they were suspended over security concerns.

In a statement on Thursday night, the airline said: “Following a thorough assessment of the security arrangements, we are pleased that our service to and from Cairo will resume from Friday 26 July.”

On 20 July, British Airways said it would halt flights to Cairo for seven days “as a security precaution” while it reviewed safety at the Egyptian capital’s airport.

The move had been followed by German carrier Lufthansa but their flights resumed a few days later.

The Foreign Office’s current advice warns against “all but essential” travel by air to the Egyptian resort of Sharm el Sheikh.

That advice followed the bombing of a Russian airline which was brought down in 2015 shortly after leaving the Red Sea resort, killing 224 people.

Cairo and surrounding areas are regarded to be safer.

EgyptAir had reacted with bemusement after British Airways had announced flights would be suspended, with an executive saying the decision had been “unexpected completely, and without a logical reason”.
