BAFTA TV Awards: Netflix’s The Crown leads the way with five nominations

Critically acclaimed royal drama The Crown has picked up five nominations for the BAFTA TV Awards.
It leads the way for May’s ceremony, picking up nods including best drama and best supporting actors for Jared Harris, Vanessa Kirby and John Lithgow.
Claire Foy is also nominated for leading actress for her portrayal of a young Queen Elizabeth II in the Netflix show.
Both Foy and the show won a Golden Globe earlier this year, making The Crown one of the streaming giant’s most successful shows yet.
A third series of the drama is reportedly in the works, jumping years into the future in its portrayal of the Queen and the Duke of Edinburgh.
Feature-length drama Damilola, Our Loved Boy – about schoolboy Damilola Taylor who was killed in 2000 – has received three nominations, including lead actor for Babou Ceesay and best supporting actress for Wunmi Mosaku.
BBC dramas Fleabag and Happy Valley also received three nominations each, including best female performance in a comedy for Olivia Colman and Phoebe Waller-Bridge.
Sky Atlantic mini-series The Night Of is up for a gong in the international category, competing with Fox anthology show The People v OJ Simpson: American Crime Story, sci-fi drama Stranger Things and Amazon’s Transparent.
In the leading actor category, National Treasure’s Robbi Coltrane has been nominated alongside Benedict Cumberbatch for The Hollow Crown.
However, there is a surprise miss for actor Tom Hiddleston, who won a Golden Globe for his role in tense spy drama The Night Manager.
Sky Atlantic’s Game Of Thrones received only one nomination, in a special category for TV’s must-see moment.
The bloody Battle of the Bastards scene is up against Ed Balls’ Gangnam Style routine in Strictly Come Dancing and Michelle Obama’s carpool karaoke with James Corden.
In the comedy categories, The Windsors’ Harry Enfield and Steve Coogan are among those up for the male performance award, while Diane Morgan and Lesley Manville are up against Fleabag stars Olivia Colman and Phoebe Waller-Bridge for the female gong.
Coogan’s nod is his 10th BAFTA nomination, this time for Sky Atlantic’s Alan Partridge’s Scissored Isle.
Nominated in the News Coverage category are Sky News Tonight – Aleppo: Death of a City, BBC North West Tonight: Hillsborough Inquests, Channel 4 News: Brexit – Day One, and BBC2’s Victoria Derbyshire.
In sport, Six Nations – England v Wales, Sky Sports’ The Open, the Rio 2016 Olympics on the BBC, and the Paralympics on Channel 4 received nominations.
The awards ceremony takes place at London’s Royal Festival Hall on 14 May.
